Teaching Philosophy and Methodology

Picture
Your child will take an active role in his/her education in my classroom. Throughout the day I utilize journal writing, hands-on activities, phonics instruction, modeling and analysis of reading strategies, games, centers, and inquiry units to teach the curriculum objectives. My goal is to give my students the opportunity to apply their school-learned knowledge to the real world. I am not just an information dispenser, but rather a facilitator that engages students in experiences that encourage the spirit of questioning. I do this by asking thoughtful, open-ended questions that encourage thoughtful discussion among students. My lessons are based on the 5 E's!

What are the 5 E's?
  1. Engagement: I start with activities that capture the student's attention, stimulate their thinking and help them access prior knowledge.
  2. Exploration: I give students time to think, plan, investigate, and organize collected information.
  3. Explanation: I involve students in an analysis of their exploration. Their understanding is clarified and modified because of reflective activities.
  4. Extension: I give students the opportunity to expand and solidify their understanding of the concept and/or apply it to a real world situation.
  5. Evaluation: I use a variety of assessment techniques to see that students have mastered the curriculum objectives.
